A new article discusses the challenges faced by Canadian teens and young adults living with type 1 diabetes. It highlights a study from Quebec that found gaps in regular diabetes care after age 10, when many children begin managing the condition on their own, are tied to higher rates of serious complications. The study showed that compared to children under 10, the likelihood of diabetes-related emergency room visits and hospitalizations increased significantly for those aged 14-15 and 22-23. The article suggests that the mental health issues and feeling “burnt out” from managing diabetes can contribute to these complications. Experts recommend addressing the mental health aspects first before tackling the diabetes management, as well as providing more support and resources for teens and young adults to help them transition to self-care.
