A study has found preconception prediabetes is associated with an increased risk of gestational diabetes among adolescents and young adults. The study, conducted by researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, used linked data from birth registries, hospital discharges, and the New York City Department of Health A1C Registry. The researchers found that 20.2% of the 14,302 participants had preconception prediabetes, and those with preconception prediabetes had more than twice the risk of developing gestational diabetes compared to those with normoglycemia. The study also found small increases in the likelihood of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and preterm delivery associated with preconception prediabetes.
