By using food frequency questionnaires, study results from the American Diabetes Association’s journal, Diabetes Care, showed that drinking diet soda was associated with a 36% risk of metabolic syndrome and a 67% greater relative risk of type 2 diabetes compared to people that never consume diet soda. One study fed mice zero calorie sweeteners, including saccharin (Sweet n Low), aspartame (equal) and sucralose (Splenda). The mice developed glucose intolerance.

People and Zero Calorie Sweeteners
The researchers were so intrigued by what happened to the mice, they found 7 volunteers, that did not drink diet beverages, and had them consume about 10-12 artificial sweetener packets during one week. After this short test, 4 out of the 7 people had changes in their glucose levels, to the point of prediabetes.
