Weight gain starting pump By: Anonymous

Hello, I started on my insulin pump about a month now and I'm gaining weight quickly (about 5-7 lbs). I have always limited my carb intake due to the fact that I have diabetes and I'm not sure what else to do. I try to stay between 25-35 carbs a meal. I do cardio when I can, just hard to fit it in with a busy mommy life. Help :(

Insulin can lead to weight gain especially when doses are given more often as with insulin pump. In my experience using metformin, a medication that increases the effectiveness of insulin therapy, can counteract some of the weight gain caused by insulin and reduce the overall amount of insulin your body will need. Walking or doing any exercise after meals can also reduce the weight gain, although it may also lead to low blood sugar levels if you are giving yourself an insulin bolus before the meal. Please consult with your provider to receive more information about metformin and adjusting your bolus dose based on exercise after the meal.
