FDA Standards 2014

Meter results are not 100% accurate. The FDA requires that results over 75mg/dl, 95% of meters must be plus or minus 20% of actual reading. For results less than 75mg/dl, 95% of meters must be within plus or minus 15 points of actual glucose level (1). These may seem like drastic differences; however, the numbers will still help you problem solve. Do not drive yourself crazy by sticking yourself multiple times because each time can be different. Re-check if you feel low and the meter does not agree, or recheck if you get a very unusual reading such as an elevated number if this is abnormal for you.

Wash your Hands

The importance of washing your hands prior to testing is essential for more accurate readings. False highs can be experienced if food residue is left on your fingers after you eat. Examples include fruit or sweets.

Difficulty Getting Blood

You want to make sure you have enough blood on your finger, so the meter does not read error. Wash your hands with warm water, pump your hands in a fist downwards, squeeze your finger a little before pricking it and then when you prick it, hold your finger down by your side while squeezing. These tips can help you get a better blood sample. Prick your finger more on the side, opposed to the middle which is more sensitive. Also make sure the lancing device is on a high enough number for you.
