During an 18 year follow-up of 1,700 women who developed gestational diabetes, 259 of them developed type 2 diabetes.

Women who were obese before developing gestational diabetes, and gained 11 lbs or more had a 43% increased rate of developing type 2 diabetes.

Guidelines for weight gain during pregnacy
- Normal weight pre-pregnancy – goal for weight gain is 25-35lbs
- Underweight – 28-40lbs
- Obese prior to pregnancy – only 11-20 lbs
