Insulin dose after you shovel snow By: Anonymous

I get very tired when I shovel snow and I feel very weak. Do i have to cut down the dose of insulin when i shovel snow? When should I check my fingersticks?

Shoveling is considered an aerobic exercise. It is important to do fingerstick right before shoveling and about an hour after. If you think that you will shovel for over 30 minutes, I recommend that you take a snack (15-30g of carbohydrates) beforehand. I would consult with your provider before you change your insulin dose. The change in the dose of insulin will depend on your fingersticks and the duration of the shoveling.
