Dosing diabetes medications for a party By: Anonymous

I have a friend who is on onglyx for diabetes. Can he double the dose of his medication because he will eat more during a party?

Prescribed medications should be taken as prescribed regardless of how much food is eaten. However, in a case of sickness when less food is being consumed, the provider should be contacted to determine if there is a need to change the dose of a medication or to stop taking the medication. When you double the dose of your medications, you may not get extra benefit but instead you may get unwanted medication effects called adverse effects. If once in a while a large amount of carbohydrates is consumed, such at a party, you do not have to change the dose of the oral medication Onglyx. However, if increased consumption occurs every day and the fingerstick values continue to be above the goal set by the provider, please inform the provider. When blood sugar is not controlled the medication regimen may have to be changed to help improve blood sugar.
